Chief technical
consultant------Academician Xu Guang-xian Academician
Xu Guang-xian graduated from Shanghai
Communication University in 1944. He went to US for study in 1947 and
got his master degree in 1949, then in 1951 he got his doctor degree.
When he was at Columbia University, he was elected to be a member of
Phi Lamda Upsilon honour chemistry association and a member of Sigma
Xi honour chemistry association. In 1951, he came back to China and
assumed associate professor in the chemistry department of Peking University.
In 1957, he went to atomic energy department which was newly founded
to be the director of the radiochemistry teaching and research group
and the vice director of the department. He was promoted to a professor
in 1960. After the ten-year Cultural revolution,
Prof. Xu came back to the chemistry department and has been engaged
in research of rare earth chemistry. He successively assumed the director
of the rare earth chemistry research center of Peking University, the
director of the chemistry science department of the State Natural Science
Fund Committee (1986~1993), the chairman of China Chemistry Academy
(1986~1990), the vice chairman and vice honorary
chairman of China Rare Earth Academy, the vice editor in chief of China
Science, Science Aviso, Chemistry
Transactions of Colleges, Inorganic Chemistry Transactions, the editor
in chief of Journal of Rare Earths, the
consultant of Rare Earths Information which is an organ of the
rare earth office of China State Development Planning Committee.
In 1980, he was elected to be the academician
of China Science Academy. In the past 40 years, Academician Xu and his
collaborators have been engaed in the educatin and research of quantum
chemistry, rare earth chemistry, coordination chemistry and extraction
chemistry, and have released more than 400 dissertations on civil or
foreign publications, and have published
8 monographs and textbooks, and have been
awarded the top prize of the State Excellent Textbook Awards. The Quantum
Chemistry written by Xu and Li Lemin is the most elaborate textbook
for postgraduates in quantum chemistry. The Rare
Earths Solvent Extraction written by Xu and Yuan Cheng-ye has
been awarded the first-class prize of the State Excellent Technical
Books Awards.
Mr.
Xu presented the"theory
of rare earth extraction in series"
after ten years of research for rare earth extraction
separation process. He together with Prof. Li Biao-guo and Prof. Yan
Chun-hua have spread the application of this technology to main rare
earth factories in China and have helped to create hundreds
of million economical and social benefit for the country. This
research fruit has been awarded the third-class prize of the State Natural
Science Awards, the third-class
prize of the State Technology Advancement
Awards and the first-class prize of the State
Education Council Technology Advancement Awards. His research
on chemical bond theory, quantivalence theory,
the structure rule of atom cluster and the electronical structure of
rare earth compound has been awarded the second-class prize of the State
Natural Science Awards
and the first Heliangheli Technology Advancement
Awards in 1994. His work has been highly
recognized by the people in this industry at home
and abroad. He has assumed the president
of international science conference and has been
invited to report at international conferences for several times. In
1987, he assumed JSPS
Senior Research Fellow
and gave lectures at Tokyo University, Kyoto University and
molecular science institute in
Japan. During 1989 to 1995, he assumed
the president of Asia Chemistry League.
